Martina Grlić

Martina Grlić is a member of the younger generation of Croatian artists focusing on figurative painting. In her artistic expression she tries to revive the past forwarding registered moments from the old photographs to her canvases. Her photorealistic oil paintings are focused on memories of a past period and reflect the changes that have occurred and are still occurring within the post-socialist society. Her paintings usually depict scenes from everyday life in the past—women working in factories, children’s toys, everyday items, as well as important historical personalities and events from her childhood. Although she deals with the elements from past throughout her works, Martina’s painting is modern in concept and execution. In her artwork, the artist addresses the problems of today’s society, explores the history and seeks to understand the roots of the world she is living in.

Martina Grlić was born in 1982 in Zagreb where she graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 2009. So far she has exhibited at numerous solo and group exhibitions in the country and abroad (France, Poland, China, Italy, Austria). She has received various awards, including the 2017 Croatian Bank award for best young artist and Erste Grand Prix for Best Painting in 2012.
