Layers of Place

The annual programme of Zen Contemporary Art Gallery includes four to five exhibitions, encompassing both solo and group shows by established Croatian and international artists. A special exhibition project is dedicated to young, emerging artists and final-year students of the Academy of Fine Arts, with the aim of providing long-term support and professional guidance. By supporting young artists, the gallery actively contributes to the development of their careers and, through continuous monitoring of their work and open collaboration, fosters their artistic maturation, encouraging exploration, bold steps forward, and the development of an authentic visual expression.

Within this context, the exhibition Layers of Place was realised as the third project of this kind. It presents a selection of recent works by three young painting graduates: Nikolija Baretić, Helena Birin, and Franka Vrljić, whose practices intertwine diverse techniques and materials, ranging from oil on canvas and wool on felt to the layering of canvas upon canvas. Through varied painterly approaches, the artists explore space as a multilayered and dynamic category: from the pastel horizons of Los Angeles, through the intimate and quiet space of the home, to the pulsating, tactile materiality of
the flea market.
